Yes, I am leaving the 8400 gs in my ubuntu system(s). However, I didn't try any extra drivers in the 10.04 system, just one of the 12's. It's working ok over the hdmi port and now that I know I can't...

I have a system with a quick connect/removable hard-drive, i.e. it's in a tray and there's a button which lets me connect or disconnect the drive at boot up. It's an IDE drive and connects to the IDE...

  8. [gnome] Re: how can I logout of 11.04 cd try out disk when unity boots up

Is there a simple command to run gnome at that point? Is there a way to force the system to recheck what displays are attached?

Any ideas why I don't get a consistent start up?

    Is it a problem...
  9. [gnome] how can I logout of 11.04 cd try out disk when unity boots up

  10. [ubuntu] ll.04 same result

11.04 is the same, xrandr also the same.

One thing interesting, during the boot up, it used my pci graphics to show the startup display with the rolling dots. As soon as it got through that, it...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: can't get dual monitors, can get one or other, not both

The problem is lower down than that.

xrandr also only shows one adapter, same as the gui configure display settings.

Only lspci can see both interfaces.

I'll give natty 11.04 a try to see...
  12. [ubuntu] it's ubuntu after all: Re: can't get dual monitors, can get one or other, not both

Well, I now know that the problem is with ubuntu.

I tried an old windows 2000 system, and while this card has crappy drivers (and in ubuntu the open source version ain't too hot either) windows...
  13. [ubuntu] Partially solved: Re: can't get dual monitors, can get one or other, not both

I can get both displays, but only by using two monitors attached to my radeon card. One using the vga and the second on the dvi.

I wonder, does this mean that my motherboard really only allows me...
  14. [ubuntu] can't get dual monitors, can get one or other, not both

I have an asus p5kpl-cm MB. I plugged in a radeon 9200 pci card. In the bios, I can set up:

    pci/igd
    igd/pci

    etc.

This determines which of the 2 displays (pci card or internal graphics...
  15. Re: can't change to gnome after logout+wifi problems etc.

I must be blind. I didn't see the new options down at the bottom on the password screen.

    thanks....

BTW, found the wireless problem, I needed a non standard driver and it's all working now.
  16. Re: can't change to gnome after logout+wifi problems etc.

This is what I see, (right) clicking on the username (ubuntu for this trial usb - i.e. not installed) gives a menu with cut, copy, delete, select all, and input methods and unicode control...

  18. [ubuntu] Re: sudo tar-ing / (for backup) to /home/me/.gvfs/share

Yup, all it took was to google "example of smbmount" and I was able to mount it.

I also found the -P tar option, which I probably don't need if I cd to the / directory instead of running the...
  19. [ubuntu] sudo tar-ing / (for backup) to /home/me/.gvfs/share

In searching the forums, there's a thread on how to do a backup of your system using tar on the / directory (with some excluded dirs).

The problem is it puts the backup file right in / after you...

  21. [ubuntu] Re: aftter upgrade to 10.04 buttons on mouse intermitent

    update:

I've went to a wired ps2 mouse and so far it's working (but only 10 minutes so far). I'm pretty sure the usb mouse is working though. I'll have to try it on another computer. Also, I...

[ubuntu] Re: Can't ping computer in network

Well, you seem network savvy, so I will assume you ran a sniffer on your dad's computer to see that it did not in fact get the arp broadcast request. Even with a switch, broadcasts should be seen by...
