    Ubuntu 10.04 & Samba error

    Hi there,

I recently upgraded my server from 9.10 to 10.04 via the command prompt, pretty standard. However, I have noticed one thing that now doesn't work. Samba.

What happens is samba says that it is running, my smb.conf is the same as before, but now it does not show up on my network on the windows computers. It is like samba is ignoring the "netbios name" in the conf file.

I ran testparm, and it showed that all my shares were correctly recognised, in fact it showed everything as in the conf file, apart from "netbios name".

Has this been changed in the most recent version of samba, or is it an Ubuntu thing?

    Many thanks,

    Nick

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 & Samba error

I have experienced the same issue. nmblookup does not return any address for my hostname. It worked until the upgrade to 10.04.

Here is my smb.conf. removed the "share modes"-directives since they were listed as deprecated in the logs. The smb share works, but netbios lookup does not.

The netbios-ssn port (139) is listed open on my system.

    Below is my smb.conf

    Cheers,
    Andreas
    ===============

    #
    # Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
    #
    #
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
    # are not shown in this example
    #
    # Some options that are often worth tuning have been included as
    # commented-out examples in this file.
    # - When such options are commented with ";", the proposed setting
    # differs from the default Samba behaviour
    # - When commented with "#", the proposed setting is the default
    # behaviour of Samba but the option is considered important
    # enough to be mentioned here
    #
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
    # "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
    # errors.
    # A well-established practice is to name the original file
    # "smb.conf.master" and create the "real" config file with
    # testparm -s smb.conf.master >smb.conf
    # This minimizes the size of the really used smb.conf file
    # which, according to the Samba Team, impacts performance
    #

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 & Samba error

    Same issue.

Installed from update manager. Samba starts/stops/restarts successfully with the new startup process.

testparm shows the smb.conf has no problems, smbclient -L localhost -U% shows the shares, but smbclient -L <server name> gives NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED.

Hmm I'm glad it's not just me then! I can't imagine that they removed this from samba, as that would be pretty stupid. I guess it's just a new conf keyword or something.

I can't find anything from Google though, hence I posted here...

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 & Samba error

    verbitan,

You stated that "samba says that it's running". I presume you did something like this:

    sudo service smbd status

Did you make sure nmbd was running:

    sudo service nmbd status

The old "samba" service combined the smbd and nmbd daemons into one service. Now that we're back to the good old days, each daemon needs to be started separately.

Yeah, both those services are running...which results in me being able to access the share in windows by typing \\192.168.1.100 but not \\netbiosName

    This is the real problem...

As you can see, some of the smb.conf settings are not parsed like they were before. Although I can see all the shares via \\192.168.1.100 I cannot actually access any of them, as it is saying the credentials are incorrect...even though they have been working fine before the upgrade!

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 & Samba error

Wanted to say the nmbd service was entirely my issue.

It isn't auto-starting for me with 10.04....something that really should be publicized and/or fixed if a split up of such a common system app happens in a release.

I certainly am no expert with Samba and Lucid (is anybody yet?). I can say that Samba services are now started by Upstart scripts and that is why NMBD is separated from SMBD. I believe that the init.d script is what put them together.

A second point to note is that if the interface is not "up" when NMBD is initiated it will die. Are you using DHCP? Or worse yet network-manager?

You can always make the Samba server a WINS server and Windows hosts will use that instead of broadcasting. They are normally set to "hybrid" mode for just that purpose.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 & Samba error

same problem here running: "initctl status smbd
    returns: smbd start/running, process 689

    initctl status nmbd
    nmbd start/running, process 1224

I have found that running: sudo restart smbd
will fix the problem temporarily; however after a reboot the daemon needs to be restarted again before it will work properly.

I am using a static IP for this machine.

In my case I cannot access the share using an ip address or the hostname of the server.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 & Samba error

My server is also setup with a static ip. Everything else on it works fine, just the samba share that doesnt. I have even tried apt-get remove --purge samba, and reinstalled it with no avail...

This is like the main feature of my server so I need it fixed...

    EDIT:

I have tried this again, and even with the default settings, the server is not accessible.
